Sample Itineraries
A DAY
IN CONCORD
- Start the day
at the Concord Museum where Concord's history begins. See the famous
Revere lantern, the treasures of both Thoreau and Emerson, and remarkable
collection of Concord antiques. While you are there, don't miss the
award-winning film Exploring Concord.
- Next visit the
home of famous author Louisa May Alcott (of Little Women fame) as
well as those of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
- Take time to
enjoy the natural landscape and historic headstones of Sleepy Hollow
Cemetery-burial place of the Concord authors.
- You may choose
to have lunch in Concord center, with a variety of dining options,
or you may dine at the historic Concord's Colonial Inn, a favorite
among visitors to the area. While in town, be sure to take time to
shop in the many boutiques along Main Street for one-of-a-kind gifts.
- A visit to the
Old North Bridge where the famous "shot heard 'round the world"
was fired, Daniel Chester French's Minute Man statue, and the historic
Old Manse will complete you tour of the town.
- Finally, saunter
around Walden Pond and let Thoreau's words inspire you. Or enjoy the
many recreational activities and hiking trails throughout the town.
A DAY IN LEXINGTON
- Visit the Minute
Man National Historical Park Visitor Center, where you can view The
Road to Revolution, a multi-media presentation. Walk in the footsteps
of the minutemen as you journey over the Battle Road Interpretive
Trail. Along the way, stop at the Hartwell Tavern where costumed interpreters
demonstrate historical crafts.
- Enjoy lunch
in Lexington's town center, a quaint New England site featuring a
variety of dining experiences and lots of unique shops.
- After lunch
walk the Battle Green in Lexington Center and view the statue of Captain
John Parker. Journey to the Buckman Tavern for a guided tour of the
meeting place of colonial soldiers. Next, stop by the Visitors Center
for tourism information and to view an impressive diorama of the Battle
of Lexington.
- A final "must
see" in Lexington is the National Heritage Museum where you will
find changing exhibits on American history and popular culture as
well as the permanent exhibit Lexington Alarm'd.
- During the summer
months, tour Lexington and see its key historic sites and museums
aboard the Liberty Ride.
A DAY IN LOWELL
- Begin your visit
at the Lowell Historical National Park Visitors Center at Market Mills.
Explore exhibits and view the award-winning multi-image video: Lowell,
The Industrial Revelation.
- Continue your
adventure aboard a turn-of-the-century trolley to the Boott Cotton
Mills. Feel and hear what it was like to work in a 1920's weave room
with operating power looms. Explore the history of mill girls and
immigrants at the Morgan Cultural Center.
- Enjoy lunch
at one of downtown Lowell's many restaurants and cafes. Stroll the
beautiful cobblestone streets and be sure to stop by one of Lowell's
boutiques and one-of-a-kind museum shops for that unique gift.
- Be sure to visit
the American Textile History Museum, The New England Quilt Museum,
The Revolving Museum, and the Brush Art Gallery. See the birthplace
of James McNeill Whistler. Walk the streets where Beat author Jack
Kerouac once roamed.
- Wrap up your
day with tickets to professional sporting events, Broadway musicals,
or the theatre. You don't have to travel far and wide to find recreation.
It's right at your fingertips in Lowell.
